Japan has achieved a significant milestone in space exploration by successfully landing its Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) on the lunar surface, marking the nation as the fifth in history to accomplish this feat. The unmanned SLIM spacecraft touched down near the small Shioli crater, just south of the Sea of Tranquility, an area renowned for NASA's Apollo 11 historic moon landing in 1969​​​​.

The mission, however, is facing unforeseen challenges. After the successful soft landing, it was discovered that SLIM's solar cells were not functioning, jeopardizing the mission's longevity. As a result, the spacecraft has to operate on a low battery mode to conserve power. This development has put the mission at risk, as the lack of electricity generation means that SLIM may only have a few hours of operational life left. The precise location of SLIM is currently unknown, and further information is expected to be released in a subsequent news conference by JAXA, Japan's space agency​​​​.

Despite the solar cell issue, which occurred post-landing, the mission has been a technical success. SLIM has been communicating and receiving commands, confirming the accomplishment of a soft landing. However, if the solar cells remain offline, the main lander will have a limited lifespan. This scenario reflects the inherent challenges of space exploration, where even small technical issues can have significant consequences​​.

The mission also carried two Lunar Excursion Vehicles (LEVs), which were successfully deployed. These sub-crafts are designed to operate semi-independently from the main lander, capturing images of the landing area and SLIM itself. While there is anticipation for the images and data these LEVs might send back, they are not immediately available​​.

Researchers were hoping to study rocks around the landing site to gain insights into the moon’s origin. The analysis of these rocks, potentially revealing information about the moon's formation, signifies the scientific importance of this mission​​.

Landing on the Moon is an incredibly complex endeavor, as evidenced by the challenges faced by various nations and private companies in recent years. Despite the current difficulties, Japan's achievement with SLIM is a testament to the country's advancements in space technology and its commitment to exploring the final frontier.
